iPad, Kindle, Google Nexus One: Knockout Round

Share

The two devices -- Google Nexus One and the iPad -- have nothing in common. These devices are targeted at different market segments. Kindle does come close to the iPad however it is 'just' an ebook reader. Kindle and iPad will be competing against each other directly. Let's have a look at how different or similar are these three devices.

The Nexus One is primarily an iPhone competitor, whereas the iPad is Apple's attempt at a tablet PC. The device which once used to be limited to a small user base may see a major boost with the iPad. So, Nexus One is out of this fight for now. This knock-out round is between Kindle and iPad.

Looking at the specs and prices, iPad is going to crush the Kindle market. The way iPod has silenced all other music players, similarly iPad will end the 'eReader' for ever. Kindle doesn't stand anywhere closer to the iPad. The biggest drawback is price. When you can get a full-fledge computer for $499, why would you buy a Black/White screen eReader?

So, which one will you buy?

Actually the Nexus One is a

Actually the Nexus One is a good match for the iPad. It does everything the iPad does, and has an only slightly lower resolution screen (800x480 instead of 1024x764). On the plus side the Nexus One can multi-task, has GPS, motion sensing and a 5M pixel camera with flash built in, has much better portability and is an open platform with much better Internet connectivity.

The Nexus One beats the iPhone/iPad combo on both price and portability for portable use. A Nexus one with a slightly larger screen is all that is required to beat the iPad on all counts.

However Google/HTC appear to be working on a tablet running Chrome OS, with much better screen resolution and battery life than the iPad, and which will probably cheaper. http://mashable.com/2010/01/02/google-tablet/

It appears therefore that:

Nexus One > iPad + iPhone (except for 800x480 screen)

Google Tablet > iPad

You are missing something here

I'm sorry, but this is a terrible article. Why would you even compare these devices/set up this a "knockout round" when you even *wrote* that the Nexus One is intended as competition against the iPhone, not the iPad. Meanwhile, the iPad is all about competition against netbooks (which it will not win against in terms of market share).

The iPad is most certainly *NOT* direct competition to the Kindle device...not even close, as the iPad is terrible for any serious ebook reading. Why? - because it's nothing more than plain old 1024x768 backlit LCD technology, while Kindle is E Ink, which is VASTLY better for reading...not a little, but VASTLY better. If you had seen an E Ink device, you'd know this in about 5 seconds...it's *that* obvious, and is like looking at real paper.

Compare it to the right things

If you are insisting on comparing it to other products, be sure to compare it to products that offer the same quality, specs and targeted audience, The Archos 9 for instance:

Shall we expect some product similar to ipad from Google?

Google may release some product (Google iPad?) something similar to Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle.

Really nice software, just have a try now.

If you're going to put a

If you're going to put a price point of $499 for the apple tablet, you cannot include the 3G connectivity...that's only available on the much more expensive models. You gave the highest available price point (unsubsidized) to the Nexus one, and the lowest available one to the iPad (if you had given the highest price point it'd be up around $900). That's unfair to the uninformed consumer.

Your iPad price should read $499 (without 3G), list a full pricing guide, or list the nexus at $179 (with a 2 year contract).

You may also want to list that the iPad chip is 1gz in case people are price shopping it with other tablets/netbooks.

Thank you for your consideration in giving people an honest reflection of the facts.

Your table says that the

Your table says that the Kindle DX weighs 8164 grams. Really, that's a lot, approximately 17 pounds. Web page for Kindle DX says 1.2 pounds

Also the iPad version said to be coming in 60 or 90 days, forget which, has 3G.

Kindle DX is one thing, but

Kindle DX is one thing, but the regular Kindle will always have room in my "gadget portfolio." I love the Kindle and have since the day it was introduced, and while I also have an iPhone and can read books on it, the Kindle reading surface is much easier on the eyes than the iPhone screen. So, while I would love to have an iPad and probably will, I don't foresee using it to read books. Everything else (games, videos, internet, etc.)?

You bet!

I agree -- I'm a Mac and iphone user, but nothing beats my Kindle for reading. My eyes can't handle reading on my iPhone or iMac for long, but I can read for hours on my Kindle -- different devices for different purposes.
